Yellow Jacket, Wasp & Hornet Control Tips for Your Yard

Yellow Jackets, Wasps & Hornets Are Out in Force This Season

The combination of a long, dry spring followed by hot summer weather has created ideal conditions for yellow jackets, wasps, and hornets. As a result, we’re seeing unusually high populations and increased nesting activity this season.

These stinging insects are opportunistic nesters and will build colonies almost anywhere they can find shelter. Common nesting locations include underground burrows, behind house siding, old tree stumps, wood piles, hollow pipes, trees, and other protected spaces. Besides being a nuisance, their stings can quickly turn outdoor activities into an unpleasant experience.

Fortunately, Burns Feed Store has several effective solutions to help you safely control these pests and enjoy your yard again.

Sprays & Dusts

We carry a variety of Enforcer and Spectracide wasp and hornet control products, available in both aerosol spray and expanding foam formulas. Many of these products feature powerful jet sprays that reach between 22 and 27 feet, allowing you to treat nests while maintaining a safer distance.

For underground nests, insecticidal dust is often the best solution, as it penetrates areas where traditional sprays may not reach effectively.

Yellow Jacket Traps

Burns Feed Store also stocks Rescue! reusable yellow jacket traps, which include a month’s supply of attractant bait. Replacement bait refills are available so you can continue using the trap throughout the season.

If you’re looking for a simple, ready-to-use option, Rescue! disposable yellow jacket traps come pre-filled with bait and typically remain effective for one to two months.

Not sure exactly which stinging insect you’re dealing with? The Rescue! W.H.Y. (Wasp, Hornet, Yellow Jacket) Trap is an excellent all-purpose option. It attracts up to 20 different species of stinging insects and includes an initial bait packet, with refill bait available when needed.

Tips for Best Results

For the safest and most effective control:

  • Treat nests after dark whenever possible. Yellow jackets, wasps, and hornets return to their nests at dusk and are much less active at night.
  • Place traps 25 to 30 feet away from patios, decks, picnic tables, or other gathering areas. This helps attract insects away from where people are spending time.
  • Consider lighting citronella candles around outdoor seating areas. While not a complete solution, they can help discourage stinging insects, mosquitoes, and other flying pests.

If you’re dealing with yellow jackets, wasps, or hornets this season, stop by Burns Feed Store. Our knowledgeable staff can help you identify the problem and recommend the right products to safely and effectively eliminate these unwanted pests so you can get back to enjoying the outdoors.
